Code of Ethics

Purpose of the code

The Code sets the standards expected of Occupational Wellness Practitioners (OWP) for guidance on best practice and standards for ongoing membership of the Institute of Occupational Wellness Practice. You will be expected to direct your clients to the code for reference purposes.

Any client past or present who believes their OWP does not adhere to the codes of ethical practice may in the first instance discuss with their Occupational Supervisor if not satisfied can raise their concern with the Association of Occupational Wellness Practitioners to make a formal complaint, thereafter to an external complaints officer.

Fitness to practice

We consider an Occupational supervisor’s fitness to practice as:
• Able to practice without breeching the Codes of Ethics.
• Keeps on top of ongoing CPD.
• Maintains their wellbeing both physically, psychologically, and emotionally.
• Able to maintain their integrity and self-awareness.

Dual Relationship

Any dual relationship between you and your client should be declared to the association, the association may ask for evidence to show this is a purely professional relationship. A dual relationship means you that you already have another type of relationship, if this is the case it may be very difficult to maintain professional boundaries. For this reason, it is not considered to be best practice for a professional to work with anyone inside their own immediate profession or with friends or family.

Fundamental principles of the code

• Working towards the good of the practitioner and their client and doing no harm (Beneficence and maleficence).

• Practitioners hold their clients wellbeing and professional development central to their work and do no harm.

• Being trustworthy and responsible (Fidelity). OWP's endeavour to build a safe professional relationship with their clients, honour the trust placed in them by their clients and the community at large.

Prejudices

OWP's are aware of their own judgements based on their own experiences and need to take precaution that their service is not limited by their own judgements and prejudices.

Showing respect for diversity of persons, without prejudice to colour, race, belief, gender, sexuality, social context and mental and physical abilities.

Integrity and Self-responsibility

OWP's to be as honest, truthful, and accurate as possible. They are responsible for their own health and wellbeing. A OWP will only commit to practice that they can offer being aware of their own expertise, training and health and wellbeing, letting the client know if anything changes.
